About Nu Jiang Langcang Gorge National Nature Reserve

Nu Jiang Langcang Gorge National Nature Reserve is situated in the northwest of Yunnan Province in China, encompassing a remarkable stretch of the Nu River (also known internationally as the Salween River). The reserve protects one of Asia's deepest river gorges, part of a complex ecosystem encompassing rugged mountains, steep cliffs, and diverse subtropical to alpine vegetation zones. The area is notable for its exceptional biological diversity, hosting numerous rare and endemic species of plants and animals, including endangered species such as the Yunnan snub-nosed monkey and the black snub-nosed monkey. The region serves as a critical corridor for migratory birds and rare mammals. Established in 1983, the reserve is part of the larger transboundary Nujiang Gorge biodiversity hotspot shared with Tibet and Myanmar. Visitors to the reserve can enjoy immersive hiking trails that traverse deep gorges, waterfalls, and ancient forests, as well as rafting opportunities on the Nu River, offering stunning views of the rugged cliffs. The reserve is culturally significant as well, with several ethnic minority communities residing in the surrounding valleys, providing insight into traditional lifestyles and mountain agriculture. Due to its remote location and limited infrastructure, the reserve appeals mainly to eco-tourists, researchers, and adventurous travelers seeking unspoiled nature and rich biodiversity. Conservation efforts focus on preserving the delicate ecosystems and preventing the impacts of dam construction and deforestation. The Nu Jiang Langcang Gorge remains a vital refuge for many endangered species and a site of outstanding natural beauty and scientific value.
